Bicton Primary School promotes a respectful, nurturing, and supportive environment.

Health and Physical Education

Our students at Bicton learn how to enhance their own and others health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts. Our Health Program and Physical Education Program focuses on ensuring our students focus on the curriculum but also our Bicton Values which form part of the core learning. Students are challenged at many levels and are able to engage in different team games, sports and activities that capture their interests. Our Health Program is supported by our school chaplain and we have a Physical Education specialist.

A small snapshot of key focuses and strategies Bicton is employing to continue to build our Health and Physical Education programs and pedagogy are:

  • Ensure all students are taught the ‘Protective Behaviours Program’ each year.
  • Continue to investigate other health programs, initiatives and resources that may further support our current Health program.
  • Successfully apply for Sporting Schools Funding to facilitate different physical education experiences for our students.
  • Implementation of iPads and technologies in Physical Education lesson to develop the formative assessment practices and feedback.
  • Improve the portable facilities available for inter-school carnivals.

Protective Behaviours

Our school teaches students protective behaviours, aligned to the Western Australian Health curriculum.

Protective Behaviours is a practical, empowering approach to personal safety. It is a process that encourages and develops self-confidence alongside skills that help us safe. This is achieved by recognising our personal concept of safety, trusting our intuitive feelings (early warning signs) that tell us when we are feeling unsafe and developing strategies for self-protection. The Protective Behaviours process links safety with fun and excitement and an adventurous approach to life.

Primary teachers teach our students the following topics:

  • Exploring skills for life: Kindergarten and Pre-Primary
  • Developing skills for life: Years 1 and 2
  • Establishing skills for life: Year 3 and 4
  • Rehearsing skills for life: Year 5 and 6
