Our students at Bicton learn how to enhance their own and others health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts. Our Health Program and Physical Education Program focuses on ensuring our students focus on the curriculum but also our Bicton Values which form part of the core learning. Students are challenged at many levels and are able to engage in different team games, sports and activities that capture their interests. Our Health Program is supported by our school chaplain and we have a Physical Education specialist.
A small snapshot of key focuses and strategies Bicton is employing to continue to build our Health and Physical Education programs and pedagogy are:
Our school teaches students protective behaviours, aligned to the Western Australian Health curriculum.
Protective Behaviours is a practical, empowering approach to personal safety. It is a process that encourages and develops self-confidence alongside skills that help us safe. This is achieved by recognising our personal concept of safety, trusting our intuitive feelings (early warning signs) that tell us when we are feeling unsafe and developing strategies for self-protection. The Protective Behaviours process links safety with fun and excitement and an adventurous approach to life.
Primary teachers teach our students the following topics:
Being the best person you can be, and dreaming big.
Bouncing back after challenges and accepting things happen that we can’t always control
Caring about everyone and the world around us
Making positive choices for yourself, others and the environment
